Appointment will be made on salary scale (€98,350 – €114,014) at a point in line with Government pay policy.

Position Summary:

This is a new post where the post-holder will join an expanding multi-disciplinary psycho-oncology team. The Principal Psychologist will lead the psychology team within psycho-oncology and provide specialist psychology input to the team and the Department of Psychology in Beaumont Hospital.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Experience Required

1. Experience and extensive knowledge in psycho-oncology and cancer care;

2. Have experience in the psychological assessment and treatment of cancer patients;

3. Have experience in the supervision of trainee grade & basic grade clinical psychology positions;

4. Have a proven track record in Clinical/Counselling Psychology research as the appointee will have the opportunity to develop specific research interests;

5. Have a proven record of involvement with the management of a psychology service, experience in assisting service development, general and budget management and general staff supervision;

6. It is desirable to have an interest and preferably experience in the treatment of patients with medical conditions and cancer;

7. Have the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Thus, the appointee will possess excellent written and oral communication skills and will participate in case conferences and ward rounds.


1. The successful candidate will join a very committed multidisciplinary Psycho-oncology. The successful candidate will have a major clinical work commitment to the Psycho-oncology team but will also be expected to contribute to the overall leadership of the Psychology Department.

2. The successful candidate will be assigned supervisory and administrative responsibilities for the Psychology Department by the Head of Psychology (e.g. supervision of Basic grade and Senior Psychologists) and will be required to deputise for the Head of Department when the Head is unavailable.

3. The candidate will be expected to contribute to training of hospital staff as necessary, e.g. giving lectures within the hospital and sharing knowledge in both formal and informal ways.

4. To ensure the provision of the highest standard of practice and care in the clinical psychology service, and to work with the Head of Psychology to ensure that clinical risk management practices and clinical audit form the basis of the standards of practice.

5. To provide ongoing supervision for the senior, basic and trainee grades of staff, in accordance with guidelines as defined by the Psychology Society of Ireland. S/he may be responsible for the management of other staff as assigned by the Head of Psychology.

6. To undertake assessment, appropriate therapy interventions and preventative programmes and to liaise and co-ordinate with relevant professional staff in determining treatment options for clients.

7. To provide professional reports and information to other professional staff and such other reports as appropriate.

8. To participate actively in the ongoing training, lecturing, development and continuing education of staff and to establish links with the educational institutions with regard to under and post graduate training as appropriate.

9. To undertake research in psychology and to participate in the specialised research interests of the staff in the department and to link with the ongoing research in Beaumont Hospital as relevant.

10. To provide a psychology service in line with Psychology Department service plans and objectives and within established guidelines and policy.

11. To contribute to the Annual service plan and review, to include work activities, with evidence of qualitative and quantitative outputs. To work on service development, general administration, budget management and general staff supervision and management for the Psycho-oncology service, in conjunction with the Head of Psychology.

12. The Principal (Specialist) Clinical Psychologist in Psycho-oncology will maintain collaborative working relationships with psychology colleagues, members of multidisciplinary team and as required, with outside agencies.

13. To manage continuing professional development, including availing of mandatory supervision in clinical psychology and mandatory hospital training as agreed with the Head of Psychology.

14. To carry out such other duties as may be assigned to him/her by the Head of Psychology, Chief Executive or designated officer.

These duties and responsibilities are a reflection of the present service requirements and may be subject to review and amendment to meet the changing needs of the service.

Selection Criteria:

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.

Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc Candidates musta) Hold i) a recognised University degree or diploma obtained with first or second class honours in which psychology was taken as a major subject and honours obtained in that subject, and, ii) a recognised postgraduate professional psychological qualification appropriate to the area of professional psychology in which the position is designated. b) have at least eight years satisfactory post graduate experience in the area of professional psychology in which the position is designated inclusive of any time spent in pursuing a course leading to the postgraduate qualification and including at least three years satisfactory experience in a senior capacity c) Candidates must possess the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and management ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
